Charles was educated at Cambridge University (St. John's College), obtaining an M.A. and became Governor of co Monaghan and MP on 17 Feb 1735.
It appearers that he was following in his father's somewhat "darker" side as in the same year, he formed the Dublin Hellfire Club, along with Lawrence Parsons, 1st Earl Rosse and James Worsdale (Portrait painter, actor and rake) .
However, for some reason he presumably turned from the "dark side" as he became a clergyman (ordained at Clogher 24Aug1738), Rector of Muckno (1739), Prebendary of Derry (1740), Rector of Conubar & Conbar (1740) and then Dean of Killahoe (1750-1761) .
