Hollyford 1999 continued

One leaves the lower Hollyford River to follow an easy flat track which reaches the base of cliffs then a long bridge over the Pyke River and a slight diversion to the pleasant Lake Alabaster.

Get up early to get some morning reflections on the still lake.

From Alabaster one follows an easy track along the upper Hollyford, over a gentle saddle with falls (Homer) followed by glimpses of Mt Tutoko and its Donne Glacier on the way down to Hidden Falls Hut which looks out to Mt Madelene. The falls are a further 10-15 minutes and well worth the bother.

After Hidden Falls, the track is VERY easy and pleasant going, with magnificent views of Mts Tarewai, Milne, Te Wera and Tuhawaiki (the Darran Mountains). After lunch at Humboldt Creek, it is a short distance to the road end where there is a sidwe track to the high Humboldt Falls, much closer than indicated on the sign. Transport to Te Anau via the Milford Road is worth pre-arranging.
